Medication #2: Belviq (Lorcaserin)

June 18, 2019 by Kerri Maxcy PA-C

Belviq is an approved medication for long term weight loss in individuals with a BMI >30 or those with a BMI >27 and another medical condition, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.  If you are not sure what your Body Mass Index (BMI) is, make sure to check out our previous post on “Understanding your risk when it comes to your weight” for a link to calculate your BMI.

Belviq can be taken once or twice daily.  This medication works in the hypothalamus, which is part of the brain, to help decrease food consumption and promote fullness.  It targets a hunger receptor to help you feel full sooner.  Belviq has also been shown to help improve cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels.

This medication is not recommended for use in those with valvular heart disease and has an increased risk of low blood sugar in individuals with Type II Diabetes.  Individuals on certain medications may also not be able to take Belviq.
